Actions to change the world
School project of the BOS I 10 at the David-Roentgen-Schule, Neuwied.
BUT...all of us can make contribute to a better world by only changing little things in their everyday lives.
Inspired by the project "We Are What We Do" we have started to publish our own ideas how to change things for the better.
Here you can find the ideas of the BOS I 10 at the David-Roentgen-Schule, Neuwied.

Everywhere you look you see paper. From posters to cardboard boxes and magazines, paper is part of our live. It takes up over 40% of our waste stream, making it the top material that we throw away. That means for every 100 pounds of trash we throw away, about 35 pounds of it is paper! If we could just recycle one morning newspaper every day, we could save 41.000 trees from being cut down.
Paper recycling is the process of manufacturing old paper products and turning them into new paper products. Recycling old paper products uses 60% less energy than
manufacturing it from new materials.
Making paper is a easy process. Paper is made from trees, and every single part of the tree is either chopped up to make products or burned to create energy. When every person recycle cardboard and other paper products you can create millions of new products such as egg cartons, toiletpaper, newspaper, etc.
There are so many other products that you can make with recycled paper. And the best thing about paper recycling is that it used less chemicals and bleaches, which is safer for the environment.
What are the andvantages of recycling?
- for every ton of newspaper recycled you can save enough energy to power a television for 31 hours
- recycling one ton of paper can save 17 trees
- reduces sulfur dioxide emissions
- uses less fossil fuels
- most paper can be recycled up to 8 times to create new products
- save energy

Use rainwater !
Source of picture: http://www.allmystery.de/dateien/uh60967,1270667801,regen-t9952.jpg
You can save a lot of water and much money when you use rainwater instead of fresh water for several things. Also it is good for the environment because the process to get fresh water and to supply it, pollutes the nature in a second way.
For example it can be used for the toilet flushing, the washing machine, garden watering and to wash your car. Furthermore the industry can use rainwater for their tasks, too.
Daily 10 billion liters of water are consumed in Germany. On average one person consumes about130 liters of fresh water a day. If we would use rainwater for the above mentioned points, everyone would save 60 liters a day and thereby a alone living person would save between 65 and 150 euros per year. Every person needs 34 liters for the toilet flushing, 15 liters for the washing machine, 4 liters for the garden watering and 7 liters to wash the car or similar. A household of four persons could save even 70000 liters per year.
For this points you can install a rainwater tank with a pump and a filter. You can also use rainwater for bathing or showering when you ensure a better quality of water. This could be reached by a own little purification plant or by using more filters which have different functions or different building techniques. Besides you can fill up your swimming pool with it. That will save much money because that has a big capacity of water.
It is an easy, profitable and environment-friendly way, so use rainwater in and around your house.
Open your eyes !
It is very valuable to be interested in someone. Don't walk with blinkers trough the world.
Today, our society became faster and faster. So much people are very hectically and don't interested in someone.
Much people see others who are in helpless situations. For them that's “peanuts” but you don't have to forget that these concerned people maybe need a little bit of help.
For example:
1. You're sitting in a bus. On the next stop, there is an old woman with a walking stick. She steps into the bus and you see, that she can't stand all the time. She needs to sit. So you have to ask yourself: Would you stand up and offer her your place ?
You see an woman with a baby carriage and she wants to go downstairs to the underground. There is nobody who helps her. Would you help her ? Or you just pass by ?
There are much little things you can do:
- Open the door for someone
- invite your neighbour to dinner or coffee if you know, that he/she is the most time alone
Do you know or remember the song “Another day in paradise” from Phil Collins ? The song was written to bring attention to the problems of homelessness and in my opinion this song could help us to remember that we have to be interested in the other people too.
Don't forget that in future we are all older people and everyone of us would be happy, if there is a person, who helps us in situations like these.
Behave respectfully to everyone !
I'm sure you're glad if other people behave you respectfully too !

The standby mode - sometimes usefull, but often expencive!
Everybody knows them, the little red lights in our households. They’re almost everywhere. On our television, the sound system, the computer or the electric toothbrush. It looks like the devices are turned off, but in truth they’re turned on and cosume a lot of electrical energy, altough no one use them.
The standby mode helps us to activate devices easier and faster. For example you can push a button on the remote control of the television and it turns on immediately. Or you can move the mouse of a computer and the monitor turns on, so you can start to work without waiting on hold.
If we would renounced of these little aids or turn the devices off always, we can save up to 10% energy. Only in germany the households produce over 2150 million euro electricity costs every year with this lights of the standby mode.
Here are some tips to avoid unnecessary costs through the standby mode:
• Use a power strip to disconnect the devices from the power supply system.
• When you don’t have a power strip, press the power switch on the back of the device.
• Computers, monitors und printers have an energy-saving mode. Use this when you make a longer break!
• Buy your equipment with auto-off switch. If the device is not used, it switches off after one hour.
Everybody can help to save electrical energy, even with such little things.

Turn off the tap while you brush your teeth
Switch off while you brush! Most of us leave the tap running while we brush our teeth until we have finished the final swill. It’s time to break that habit and save up to 6 liters a minute. That is 35.000 litres of water per family, per year.
If the adult population of England and Wales did turn off the tap, this could be save 180.000 liters a day – enough to supply nearly 500.000 households.
Besides, you must also follow the financial aspect. The price for 1000 liter of water is about 5,00 euros. This price consists from freshly and sewage water. With switching off the tap while you brush, you can save a lot of money per year. By 35.000 liters, you save 175 euro. I think this is also a good factor to switch off the brush.
Saving water at home, in the garden or at work takes very little effort, but makes a surprisingly difference. In general, this involves simply cutting out the amount of water we are wasting through our day-to-day habits – like when we leave the tap running while we brush our teeth.
"The wars of the future are led around water" -this prophesy experts. Many states which have poor water resource are envious of her neighbour and are not declined to lead a war for fresh water if it´s necessary. Particularly as water is absent especially in the regions in which the population still grows. The wars of the 21st century will not be led any more around oil, but around water.

Find out where your Lunch has come from!!!
Many fruits have a long way into the Shop. Kiwi fruits are flown from New Zealand to England 12,000 miles and produce five times more greenhouse gases as their weight. Shops buy many fruits from other countrys for a big selection during the whole year.
For example you can buy strawberrys all the time from other countrys. But strawberrys have in may to august in Germany better tastes as in wintertimes from other countrys.
You don´t know what the producers are doing, if they use illegal pesticide or child labour for the fruits.
The transport with the airplane produce on the first 20km, 1000 times more polluting emissions as a car from type GolfIV. The German Lufthansa have a average comsumption from 4,9l kerosine for 100 passenger-km and on one barrel cargo-km comes 10 passenger-km.
That are 80% emissions more as a car produced.
Eight times more as on the streets and 50 times more with the train.
You should eat seasonal fruits from your country. The fruits have a better taste and you know where they grow up.
Think twice about eating what you eat and if it makes sense to buy fruits from other countrys.

Lower Temperatures for more Savings
"Reduce the temperature by just one degree. You can use it to reduce more than 15 percent of heating costs!"
The ideal room temperature in living rooms its about 18 to 21 degrees. And it isn‘t responsibly against the nature to produce too much air pollution. You should also wear often a pullover for the heating in winter-seasons. If more then 1 mio. people do this, the huge electricity generators don‘t have to produce so much pollution. As already mentioned, makes one degree Celsius as 5 percent of heating costs. In order to further reduce heating costs, you should also only heat in the rooms that you actually use. These include for example the bathroom, which don’t have to heat the whole day. And the bedroom, you can save the most heating costs. While you should reduce in the night, the temperature of the other rooms by about 5 degrees, just in the bedroom a temperature of about 16 degrees to keep. Which is not only better for healthy sleep, but also very important to help you reduce your heating costs even more.
In the following diagram you can see different rooms with their ideal temperatures. The most houses have in their rooms continuously the same temperatures during the day and the night because it‘s called in the media that the startup cost the most energie. This is true, but to regulate itis more efficiently. The most useful method to align the temperature is an controlled system witch regulate the day- and nighttemperature.
"Chewing gums are moving by the world"
How high the costs for the cities are for the cleaning of the streets isn´t mostly known. The remove of one chewing gum from the streets takes 2 minutes. It costs 1 euro per chewing gum. In the streets you see many black ugly spots which aren´t to be removed with the normal methods. In Germany amount the costs round 900 million euros. The most chewing gums are finding in front of the restaurants, because they want to depose their gums before they eat.
Also at bus stops you can see the same picture. Very many chewing gums are paste at the ground. Even in front of dustbins, because many people wants to put the gum in but they don´t hit the dustbins.
It is so easy to get chewing gum stuck to your clothes and shoes because discarded gum seems to get everywhere - bus and train seats, playgrounds, car parks and on every street. So what are the best methods of removing chewing gum?
The project in the UK is the first step I think. Put your gum in the bin.
Its a very good idea and this is in Germany possible, too. So we can save a lot of money. This money can we use for new hospitals or employ many people in different jobs.
Solving the chewing gum problem isn't about cleaning gum off pavements. It's about changing people's behaviour so that they will put their gum in a bin.

strom save in the household
Stream reduction in costs is definitely an area in which a lot of money can be saved. How many technical devices run constantly in the state By mode and use stream and therefore energy what would not have to be. Even, one should not mean it, an accumulator case-net part in the outlet which is not connected on the mobile phone uses a lot of energy. Here one should begin with the energy saving and uncover these little things. One will already save after a short time perceptibly energy costs. Indeed, household appliances with a high Energieeffizienzklasse are more expensive in the acquisition, but in the Nachhinein for the years seen definitely more economically in the energy consumption. Also here one should think by the new acquisition of such devices, as for example fridge or freezer and oven to be able to save energy for wide view. Also energy savings lamps bring a cost reduction. Indeed, they are mostly expensive in the acquisition, however, the savings potential is very high. An other possibility around the stream costs is to be lowered a stream supplier change as one can carry out him, for example, with an independent stream comparison and can change afterwards the supplier. So-called energy costs knives are a possibility to find out where the weak spots lie where one save stream. Thus one can evaluate where needlessly energy gets lost and saving are possible.
Result:
Energy saving is no science, this is able to everybody! If one follows a few certain rules, one performs to his purse and the environment a riesen fallen. Energy costs saving counts not only to private household, no, above all also for the economy the subject Energy reduction in costs stands in the agenda.
